While the command to evangelize is clear and the message of the gospel is powerful, many believers struggle to carry out this responsibility. The difficulty is not always due to a lack of knowledge, but often due to obstacles that hinder effective witness. Understanding these obstacles is essential. When they are identified and addressed biblically, the believer is freed to engage in evangelism with greater clarity and confidence.
I. Fear of Rejection
One of the most common obstacles is fear of rejection. The believer may fear being ridiculed, misunderstood, or dismissed. Jesus warned:
"Remember the word that I said to you, 'A servant is not greater than his master.' If they persecuted Me, they will also persecute you." (John 15:20, NKJV)
Rejection is not unusual in evangelism. It is to be expected. The message of the gospel confronts sin and challenges the heart, and not all will respond positively. However, the believer must remember that rejection of the message is not necessarily rejection of the messenger. Faithfulness requires speaking truth regardless of response.
II. Fear of Inadequacy
Many believers feel unqualified to evangelize. They believe they do not know enough, cannot answer difficult questions, or lack the ability to communicate clearly. Moses expressed a similar concern:
"O my Lord, I am not eloquent, neither before nor since You have spoken to Your servant; but I am slow of speech and slow of tongue." (Exodus 4:10, NKJV)
God's response was not to excuse Moses, but to remind him of divine sufficiency. The believer does not need to know everything. He must simply be faithful to communicate what he does know and trust God with the rest.
III. Misplaced Responsibility
Another obstacle is a misunderstanding of responsibility. Some believers feel that they must convince the sinner, produce a response, and ensure conversion. This leads to pressure, anxiety, and sometimes manipulation. Scripture teaches:
"I planted, Apollos watered, but God gave the increase." (1 Corinthians 3:6, NKJV)
The believer's responsibility is to proclaim the gospel faithfully. The work of conviction and conversion belongs to God.
IV. Lack of Urgency
A subtle but serious obstacle is a lack of urgency. If the believer does not truly grasp the seriousness of sin and the reality of judgment, evangelism becomes optional rather than essential. Jesus spoke of eternal consequences:
"And these will go away into everlasting punishment, but the righteous into eternal life." (Matthew 25:46, NKJV)
Evangelism is not merely a helpful activity—it is a necessary response to the condition of lost humanity.
V. Distractions and Priorities
Modern life presents many distractions: work, entertainment, and competing responsibilities. These can crowd out the priority of evangelism. Jesus warned:
"and the cares of this world, the deceitfulness of riches, and the desires for other things entering in choke the word, and it becomes unfruitful." (Mark 4:19, NKJV)
The believer must examine his priorities and ensure that evangelism is not neglected.
VI. Misunderstanding the Gospel
If the gospel itself is unclear, evangelism will be ineffective. Some may omit key elements, simplify the message beyond recognition, or distort it. This results in confusion and false assurance. Clarity in the gospel is essential for faithful witness.
VII. Lack of Prayer
Evangelism without prayer becomes mere human effort. Paul emphasized prayer:
"Continue earnestly in prayer, being vigilant in it with thanksgiving." (Colossians 4:2, NKJV)
Prayer prepares the heart of the believer and the heart of the hearer.
VIII. The Influence of Culture
Cultural pressure can discourage evangelism. In some settings, sharing the gospel may be viewed as offensive, intrusive, or inappropriate. However, the standard is not culture, but Scripture.
"We ought to obey God rather than men." (Acts 5:29, NKJV)
IX. Illustration and Application
Consider two believers. One allows fear, distraction, and uncertainty to prevent him from speaking. Opportunities pass, and evangelism becomes rare. Another recognizes these obstacles, addresses them biblically, and moves forward in faith. He may still feel fear, but he does not allow it to control his actions. The difference is not the absence of obstacles, but the response to them.
Conclusion
Obstacles to evangelism are real, but they are not insurmountable. Fear, inadequacy, misplaced responsibility, lack of urgency, distraction, misunderstanding, and cultural pressure can all hinder witness. However, when these are addressed through Scripture, the believer is freed to act in faith. Evangelism is not dependent on perfect circumstances, but on faithful obedience.
